The workshop brought together AKES, Tanzania’s national curriculum (NECTA) and international curricula (International General Certificate of Secondary Education, or IGCSE, and International Baccalaureate, or IB) teachers from the nursery, primary and secondary sections. It aimed to strengthen professional conduct; promote active and student-centred classroom practices; and promote coherence in instructional approaches across all levels. Through collaborative engagement, reflective dialogue and practical classroom-based strategies, participants explored shared expectations of effective teaching that directly enhance learner outcomes.

In her remarks, Professor Jane Rarieya, Dean of the Aga Khan University’s Institute for Educational Development, East Africa, emphasised the importance of the workshop.

“Sustained professional growth for teachers thrives in communities of practice,” Professor Jane said. “This workshop reflects the power of collaboration, where reflective practice strengthens professional conduct, embraces learner-centred approaches and enables educators to work collectively to improve outcomes for every learner.”

Participants expressed strong appreciation for the depth of the content, the opportunity to learn collaboratively and the relevance of the strategies shared.

“The workshop was a powerful reminder that professionalism is not just a policy, but a daily practice we live in our classrooms,” said Nilofer Charania, a Grade 5 teacher. “The focus on clear professional norms, consistent routines and aligning Aga Khan Schools’ standards with everyday teaching made the sessions practical, reflective and truly meaningful.”

Participants also highlighted the workshop as a meaningful platform for professional growth and collective learning.

“Attending this workshop was a timely and powerful learning experience,” said Cuthbert Swai, a national curriculum secondary school teacher. “It sharpened my understanding of professional responsibility beyond content delivery and encouraged more deliberate, values-driven teaching. The workshop pushed us to reflect deeply on our role as teachers and how intentional practice can positively shape learner outcomes.”

At the end of the workshop, certificates of participation were presented by Professor Jane together with Dr Shelina Walli, CEO of AKES, Tanzania, who reaffirmed AKES, Tanzania’s commitment to ongoing professional development in her closing address. AKES, Tanzania looks forward to strengthening this partnership with the Centre for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning at the Aga Khan University, Tanzania as part of its broader commitment to high-quality teaching, professional excellence and continuous improvement across all its schools.
